I have been unable for a long time now to download most films using the MPEG format which works great with Quicktime and allows me to view the movies later.

This format has better audio/visual adjustments, better flow (many of the films these days are jerky and out of sync with the sound), and do not require me to be online when viewed.

I like this service and respect the fact that they're probably shoe-string but I have been unable to watch anything worthwhile for a long time now and I visit the site less and less. What happened to these particular links, they used to be great just a couple of years ago. This happens on cable, dsl, and any other connection I've had.

How many years has it been? What links do you mean? I download something from this site virtually every day without a problem. All formats downloaded with Firefox and play with VLC without a hitch. That is not to say some of the uploads are of the best quality compared to a new film but a lot have amazing quality considering their age. Just like me!

if you had read my post then you would have noticed that I said "MPEGS" and it happens with most movies, the MPEGs rarely work

I'm using Firefox now. You are content to sit and watch while you're online but I was not talking about the application provided by IA. I was talking about the links for MPEGs!

Do you have a link you can give us that you think is broken so we can test it.

I always download MPEGS from here and have never had a problem. Matter of fact I just downloaded this in mpeg and it was fine.

I've been using the archive for years and I can't ever remember finding a broken link.

Sounds like you have a problem on your end.

I tried http://ia701205.us.archive.org/23/items/LifeAndDeathOfColonelBlimp_the/Life_and_death_ofCol_blimp.mp4,http://ia600800.us.archive.org/31/items/TheSpanishCapeMystery1935/TheSpanishCapeMystery.m4v,http://ia601200.us.archive.org/34/items/Silver_Fleet_The/Silver_Fleet_The_.mp4,& http://ia601207.us.archive.org/32/items/TheGirlFromRio/The-Girl-From-Rio-1939_1.mp4 recently. There are many others but "Detour", "The Hitch Hiker", and many others like "DOA" work. I've already watched them several times.

The "girl from rio" worked but I had seen it before when it played so I didn't watch it.

The URL is loaded and the window sits there without ever connecting, nor will it connect when I try MPEGs in the Firefox browser, except in movies which have been uploaded for a long time (bandwidth?).

This happens whether I'm in Memphis, Santa Barbara, New Orleans, and on the road, and over many types of connections - cable, DSL, and even a connection at 56Kb in Memphis worked but I didn't wait two days to download, nor even overnight.

The Nancy drew link you provided is not a valid URL. A valid URL is http://ia700307.us.archive.org/12/items/nancy_drew_reporter/nancy_drew_reporter_512kb.mp4.

I tried this one and it does work, is downloading at this moment, but I won't watch it, I have no interest in the Hardy Boys or Nancy Drew...

It's the new post that won't load. If it's a bandwidth problem then I can wait until others have finished but the problem is so unpredictable that I have stopped using your site for the most part.

I've watched all the Film Noire and BBC TV stuff worth watching using MPEGs so I'd like to fix this. I work when online and watch the MPEGs before bed. The player provided needs to be connected and I don't always have wireless. Quicktime allows me to burn a disc if I want to.

Am trying "The Silver Fleet" again but so far no download!

Down loaded all those files without any trouble.

Problem must be on your end.

yeah, well I tried another computer yesterday with a newer op system and got the same result, so much for your help, but thanks anyway.

This is a bandwidth problem with IA. But it's free so I don't expect it get better. Ever since Google took over books online the funding for IA has been absent.

@ slugs

Your valid link is invalid. The invalid link you pointed out seems to be working just fine. Maybe you have a problem with your browser, as well as your media player.

nearly an hour later and http://ia700307.us.archive.org/12/items/nancy_drew_reporter/nancy_drew_reporter_512kb.mp4 has been downloaded while "the Silver Fleet" hasn't a single byte.

Still no interest in Nancy Drew though, as a test I knew that a movie like this would work, but not the newly uploaded stuff.

On IA TV there's a lot of "Bonanza" and stuff which downloads just fine but I didn't like "Bonanza" when it was broadcast.

items get shuffled to different servers periodically and when they do server specific urls will break. to avoid this use the archival phrase arhcive.org/download to replace the serve specific phrase. so as an example:

http://ia601200.us.archive.org/34/items/Silver_Fleet_The/Silver_Fleet_The_.mp4 (server specific)

http://archive.org/download/Silver_Fleet_The/Silver_Fleet_The_.mp4

or if you'd rather, just use the identifier part of the phrase and go to the archive.org page at http://archive.org/details/Silver_Fleet_The

hope this helps.

why don't you go watch a Nancy Drew movie, your input was neither pertinent nor helpful, truth? you don't even know what format I'm talking about...

I didn't pay much attention to you, but normally I try being polite. However so many users have fewer cells in their ganglia than a sea slug. That may be the reason so many third rate movies get more than two stars.

Now that you've read this I bet you're really happy. Just watch your blood pressure.

Now sea slugs are really intelligent and some people have received a Nobel Prize studying them. Eric Kandel was one. They're one of the models for learning and behavior. But you'd have to have intelligence to understand how mollusks with giant multipolar neurons are studied. It's like talking to a third grader, there's no understanding at all...

Hey slug, just downloaded a couple from your own links, even though I have them. Special just for you, slug! Guess what, slug, com'on slug, guess! They downloaded continuously and perfectly and guess what, slug, they even play perfectly! Oh, by the way slug, you are trying to download on one particular server at archive.org. Not a good idea as it tends to slow things down. You'll never make the big leagues with that slug-ging percentage!
